A driver with a Class A CDL (plus any appropriate endorsements) can also operate all vehicles included in Classes B and C.

  • Class B: Includes single or combination vehicles where the GVWR of the single vehicle is more than 26,000 pounds. The vehicle being pulled must not be more than 10,000 pounds. A driver with an Maryland Class B CDL (plus appropriate endorsements) can also legally operate all vehicles in Class C.

  • Class C: Any single vehicle, or combination of vehicles, that meets neither the definition of Group A nor that of Group B as contained in this section, but that either is designed to transport 16 or more passengers including the driver, or is used in the transportation of materials found to be hazardous for the purposes of the Hazardous Materials Transportation Act and which require the motor vehicle to be placarded under the Hazardous Materials Regulations (49 CFR part 172, subpart F).

Testing For Your Maryland CDL:

Before you get your CDL, you must obtain your Commercial Learner's Permit. To do so, you can visit your local MVA, without an appointment, and begin the process:

  • Bring the proper identifying documents with you.

  • Show your non-commercial MD driver's license.

  • Pass a vision screening. Can be taken at the MVA office or through your own doctor.

See the MVA's guide to its Online Vision Certification Service for details on how to get your vision check with your own doctor.

  • Have your medical paperwork with you.

  • Submit to a driving record check.

The past 10 years of your record in every state plus Washington, D.C. will be under review.

  • Pass the written exam for the class of CDL you are applying, and any endorsements you want.

If you don't pass the tests right away, you'll be able to retake them. However, if you fail your test 2 times, you'll have to wait 7 days before retaking it again.

  • Pay the $90 fee.

After you have you CLP, you must wait 14 days before your CDL exam. In the meantime, practice on public roads with a valid CDL holder, who is qualified in the same class for which you are training.

When you are ready, you can schedule your CDL exam. To your exam, you must bring your CLP, your medical papers, and the $50 CDL fee. The exam consists of:

  • Pre-trip inspection (45 minutes)

  • Basic controls test (10 minutes)

  • Road test (40 minutes)

It is important to arrange to take your exam in the same type of vehicle you intend to drive, otherwise, there might be restrictions on your license.

If you are a current or recently honorably discharged member of the military with at least 2 years experience driving CMVs, then you might be qualified to waive the skills test. Apply for the waiver here. You will still need to pass the written test and pay all fees.
